Early, but hey, it's Tuesday where I am, so whatever.

How does your character and/or their culture feel about repentance?

I happened to see on Twitter that today was the 30th anniversary of The Princess Bride, which I guess makes it a good day to post about As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bride.

This is Cary Elwes' memoir of the making of the film, a book I had vaguely meant to read for years, but did not actually get around to until our new roommate left his copy in the house this summer as a sort of placeholder before actually moving in. It's very charming! I'd sort of always had a vague sense that Cary Elwes must in some way resent being forever branded as The Man In Black, and I'm sure that at some points he has and does, but this write-up is probably the most overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic Hollywood making-of memoir I've ever read. It's clearly intended for people who love the film and want to go on loving it, without a complicated feeling in sight.

My favorite part was probably the enthusiastic things that Cary Elwes and everyone interviewed had to say about Robin Wright and her acting as Buttercup; they're all like "we sailed through on jokes! playing the straight man is the hardest role in the cast! ALSO SHE CAME FROM SOAP OPERAS, SOAP OPERAS ARE SO HARD, DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LINES PER DAY --" I went in braced to feel vaguely defensive of Robin Wright and Buttercup, as I so often do, and instead I was charmed and endeared!

I also enjoyed accounts of:
- Mandy Patinkin turning up to the first rehearsal with six months of sword practice under his belt, much to Cary Elwes' dismay
- William Goldman freaking out about Rob Reiner setting the leading lady on fire
- Andre the Giant accidentally conking Cary Elwes out on set
- Cary Elwes carefully arranging himself on the grass in an elegant lounging position to hide that he'd broken an ankle joyriding in a golf card
- so much detailed description of sword training and fight choreography! *__* SO MUCH

Good morning Milliways. Let's grab a hand full of suspension of disbelief and imagine our pups are video game characters. If they were to die, what loot would drop?

Hey lovely people.

I'm vanishing for a week long hiatus while my sisters invade my house, spoil my cat, and have deeply detrimental effects on my bank balance through retail therapy.

Don't burn the bar down while I'm gone.

Unlike the orange!verse, this is a) real and b) government sanctioned, officially. <3 <3 <3 <3!

C'est magnifique, absolument! As nearly ever. I say nearly ever because nowhere's perfect, see that line in the article about previous persecution of trans* folks, but... Around here, our officials are still persecuting them. Up north, people are openly apologizing to them for the unwarranted ill. I... Shards. What am I doing down here, again? This CIS queer lady has a case of continued star eyes! Uncommon common human decency for the sharding win.

Thanks to the kindness of [personal profile] aamcnamara in loaning a copy so I did not have to fight through the library line, I read The Stone Sky - third in N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, following up on The Fifth Season and The Obelisk Gate - last weekend.

I don't think Essun destroyed any cities at all this book! I'm so proud!

So... okay, so, I saw six apartments today, and one of them seems... like it could be so good. I really, really liked it when I was in it, and then a few hours later, I was waffling like hell and doubting whether I really liked it that much and whether I should hold out for another and whether I should feel more strongly and why am I not feeling strongly... Broker pointed out that I could be gun-shy, given what apartment-hunting got me last time. I'm trying to stay balanced about the whole thing, but I don't!!!!! know!!!!!!

Me waffling about a super nice apartment )

All that said, as I was typing this entry, a friend I had lunch with checked in to see how the showing had gone. Between her reaction to the pictures and how excited I felt telling her about the place (and realizing that actually I do have places to put all my bookcases that make sense, and I could definitely work with those tiny bedrooms by painting an accent wall)... I'm leaning much more heavily yes. I should sleep on it! We'll see!

It's Friday so let's have some fun. I have two image memes in mind, feel free to do either or both.

1 - Comment with an animated gif or still image of your pup's current state.

2 - Comment with your pup(s) and we'll post an image that we think sums up your pup, either by keyword search on Google or whatever.

If if you're on cellular data, you might want to avoid this one if it gains a lot of comments. :)

Sentences I honestly had not expected to see at any point during my day when I got up this morning:

"In more than 30 years of cymbal cleaning I have used everything from ketchup to gasoline."

(I was trying to find out whether Noxon, a metal cleaner I remember using as early as Montessori preschool, would remove green discoloration from Artistic Wire, which is copper with a colored or clear coating. Turns out the process of cutting the wire into little bits and bending/looping/etc. the bits to make figure-of-eight chain exposes a lot of copper to the air and provides the opportunity for verdigris to form.)

One thing I mean to do with playing Ben again is get rid of the old habit I had of trying to type out his accent. Reading newer issues, Marvel doesn't bother with it any more, so I don't see why I should. Especially since I was always worried it was awkward to read.

I'd like to offer my own apologies for disappearing the past couple of weeks. I think Danny and Selina are the ones I've left things hanging and I hope you're good with me tagging in and continuing. If not, that's fine and thank for what we've got done. = )

I'm going to let Touji go. Chance as well. I thought both would be fun, but Chance's isn't being that loud and I already have spunky teens that are louder (Ahsoka, Selina, and Sabine), and with Touji, I'm just not having the urge to play him as well as having the problem of truly groking his culture and magic system. It seems easy on the surface, but something just isn't clicking.

I do mean to bring Ben Grimm back to Milliways...finally. News of the possible beginning of the return of the F4 to the comics landscape has woken him something fierce. I plan on starting with his time in the Guardians of the Galaxy and slowly moving forward until December when the search for Reed, Sue, and the kids starts. Very likely to stick with allusions to things happening in his life rather than doing OOMs. I just don't seem to have the time for them.

I think I need to through Tybalt (Toby Daye) and Yang (RWBY) into a sandbox to give them some play before I decide if I want to play them. I keep being tempted by both since they have new canon out or soon to be out.

Ehren and Elayne are still there. I'm waffling on Elarne. I love the world, but I'm not sure I understand it well enough. Ehren I am still having trouble deciding on a PB as well as a canon point to began play from.

I'm learning more and more that character and personality are more important to me for playing in Milliways than a cool world or powers.

OK, work and then maybe some playing or writing. I still need to get back to my Trucker Quest.

My apologies for dropping off the face of the Bar for a while there. I've been busy RL- not a great excuse, I know- and I've been making jewelry as a hobby/small business lately. Which doesn't sound like it'd interfere, but man, have you tried typing with a pair of roundnose pliers in one hand and four 18-gauge dead soft wires in the other? It is not an easy experience.

... anyway. I'm sorry to have vanished for a while, and would like to get back into posting properly if anyone is still interested.

Thanks.

Your character is about to start some new project, a new beginning--a big move, a new job, a new relationship. Is there anything they'd like to clear up from their "old life?" Mistakes they'd like to fix, misunderstandings to settle, bad habits they'd like to kick, good habits they'd like to start? What do they do?
